Important News from Crux Editor Peter Newport
New daily newsletters, weekly podcasts and an upgraded subscription system.
Everyone will have seen some signs that New Zealand’s news media is facing some really tough challenges.
We don’t yet know how all of this will end up in terms of potential Government support, or if Google and Meta will become part of the local funding ecosystem, but we can’t just sit around waiting to find out. And the funding that we did get under the previous Government’s Public Interest Journalism Fund comes to a close at the end of July, just a few weeks away.
So our approach is to innovate, add value and strive for a sustainable business model.
We’ve started by adding heaps more content and features - starting today, July 1st.
You can opt in to or out of each of these new features.
As a subscriber to our popular Friday weekly newsletter you will now also get a daily newsletter every morning with the best of the previous day’s news plus a heads up on big events that are due that day.
You will also get our weekly newsletter every Friday as before, but in a new, fresher format.
Our weekly podcast series is now live. Each Friday we’ll publish two companion podcasts - the top stories of the week linked to guest highlights plus the full guest interview as a separate episode. You can see all of the episodes to date here.
What we need from you.
As we add news content and features, we’d like to ask if you can find a way to support Crux financially. If you can, then we can keep the main site free of charge for everyone to read. We think that’s important as public interest journalism should not be the domain of only those that have money.
Our philosophy with this new subscription system is that we are offering everyone a lot of extra value for just $20 a month or $200 a year (a $40 saving.) The new system is hosted on Substack so that we can allow you to try before you buy, and still keep some things free to access. As the weeks progress we’ll be putting some elements of Substack onto a “paid subscriber only” basis.
It’s like Moving House.
So please excuse any technical glitches! Please email me direct - peter.newport@crux.org.nz - with any questions if you have problems opting into or out of the different sections or if you want to know more about how the subscription payment system works.
And …. Thank you!
For being a loyal Crux newsletter subscriber. We hope you like the new system in a world where we all need information faster and fresher. But please do subscribe today. If you’ve already subscribed - thank you, you don’t need to do anything else.
Crux depends on your ability to support us, so we can support you.
Peter Newport. Managing Editor, Crux. Queenstown July 1, 2024.
Just singed up for a year. I appreciate what you do, Crux.
